Thai PM orders continued crackdowns against narcotics

BANGKOK, March 4 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva ordered on Thursday (March 4) heads of government agencies to proceed with narcotic prevention and suppression, as more wrongdoers have been arrested.

The Thai premier made the instruction when he, himself, his deputy for national security, Suthep Thaugsuban, and Thai Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga held a video conference from Government House in Bangkok with provincial governors, heads of local government agencies and people in major towns to discuss narcotic issues.

Abhisit ordered the concerned authorities to follow his government's policies by focusing on their arrests and serious actions against both small-scaled and large-scaled drug traffickers and their networks, including those in local prisons.

The Thai prime minister also urged the authorities concerned to work closely with local people to solve narcotic problems in their respective areas, praising authorities in Thailand's northern region, including the provincial police chief in Chiang Mai, the chief of police region 5 and the Chiang Mai governor for arresting major drug traffickers lately.

During the video conference, local people also urged the Thai government to stop drug trafficking in schools and the Thai premier promised to meet the public demand. (TNA)
