3/3 Tass 136
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, March 3 (Itar-Tass) - The Sakhalin Region is
getting ready for a full-scale presentation of its investment potential in China, which has already become one of the key trading partners of Sakhalin.
"The Chinese General Consulate in Khabarovsk will provide
comprehensive assistance to the government of Sakhalin in holding the
region's presentation in Beijing on March 22-23," China's general consul in Khabarovsk, Sun Litsze, said at a working meeting with the deputy chairman of Sakhalin's government, Sergei Khotochkin, on Thursday.
"I know that last year the region presented its achievements in Seoul, and now it will do it in China," the diplomat said. "Sakhalin has a good resource potential in energy, timber processing industry and other sectors, and it is of great interest to Chinese investors." Nowadays 52 companies involving Chinese capital are registered in the Sakhalin region.
The Chinese general consul also said regional cooperation between the Russian Far East and north-eastern China "is developing dynamically, which corresponds to President Dmitry Medvedev's instructions in favor of integration with the market space of the Asia-Pacific countries."
Sun believes that the presentation of the Sakhalin Region in Bejing will become "a good momentum for the further development of these ties."
At present 17 investment projects have been named by the region as participants in the presentation. Among them there are the comprehensive development of Poronai port and the accompanying processing enterprises, construction of Sakhalin's thermoelectric power plant GRES-2, creation of a timber processing plant and construction of the Sakhalin center for the reproduction of hydrobionts as a component of the regional sea biotechnopark among others.
China is one of the key trading partners of the Sakhalin Region.
Chinese participation in the region's foreign trade is constantly
increased mainly with the export of Sakhalin's hydrocarbons.
The share of Chinese participation in the region's foreign trade
totaled a little bit more than 3 percent in 2008, but in 2009 the volume reached 844.9 million dollars, or 9.8 percent of the region's foreign trade turnover.
According to experts' estimates, China is a promising market for
Sakhalin's natural gas and coal. More than 194 thousand tonnes of
liquefied natural gas 27.9 million dollars worth was sold to China in
2009. According to the Sakhalin customs office, 325,800 tonnes of
liquefied gas 64.6 million dollars worth was delivered to China.
Last year China purchased 36,800 tonnes of coal and 109,200 tonnes of brown coal 2.2 million worth and 3.4 million dollars worth respectively.
China is an active customer of Sakhalin-produced fish and sea food.
