TS.ELBEGDORJ GIVES SPEECH AT ROUND TABLE MEETING


Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The Civil Hall at the President of Mongolia hosted Wednesday an international round table meeting themed “Developing responsible mining” in frames of the Economic forum of Mongolia. The State Head Ts.Elbegdorj has given a speech opening the meeting.
The President has underlined that an effective exploitation of mineral resources is not only vital matter of Mongolia, but also an urgent issue facing many countries. He has emphasized an importance of joining and cooperating with the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) at the World Economic Forum (WEF). “…We have joined the PACI. It is not an accident step. Many consequences appeared in those countries who have large mineral resources. Thus Mongolia is facing big challenges to exploit its mineral resources in the most proper purposes for the people and development of the country, to seek ways of cooperating with investors and to ensure the transparency of state and governmental organizations,” he has said, adding Mongolia may tackle issues on many contracts of mineral resources.
An executive director of the Center for Global Industries at the WEF Mr. Alex Wong has mentioned about 12 countries that had the center research the mining sphere and pointed out this center intends to consider urgent matters facing Mongolia in terms of responsibility and transparency in this sector. “The responsibility and transparency are both related to a good distribution of the economic benefits. We plan to pay special attention to this. The first one is how to develop the sector of mining extraction and to distribute the benefits, and another one is the issue of creating jobs through many businesses,” Mr. Wong has stressed.
D.Zorigt, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, has spoken about process of the Oyu tolgoi mine's contract and its update.
The round table meeting was continued titled "Initiative of responsible mining, its results and further steps”. In addition, sub-meetings have been held under themes “Economic integration of responsible mining”, and “Role of the mining sector in economics and equally distributing the mining benefits”.
