Thai workers to be evacuated from all areas at risk in Libya within one week

BANGKOK, March 3 (TNA) - Thai Labour Minister Chalermchai Sri-on said on Thursday (March 3) that some 8,000 Thai workers are expected to be all evacuated safely from all areas at risk in Libya within in one week and his ministry is preparing measures to assist them after the ongoing unrest in the North African nation is relieved.

Chalermchai made the assessment in response to an opposition Puea Thai Party inquiry at a House session on the Thai government's solutions to the problem of troubled Thai workers in the Middle East and the North African region, where a spate of political unrest has been reported.

Chalermchai said that his ministry and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs have jointly monitored the situation in the regions and have set up ad hoc centers to provide assistance to Thai workers in Libya, including the one at Thailand's main Suvarnabhumi International Airport in which 24-hour services are provided; while evacuations of Thai workers from all areas at risk in riot-torn Libya have been continuing.

The Thai labour minister acknowledged that a total of 1,994 Thai people have arrived home from Libya, and that there are over 10,000 Thai workers in several labour camps in Libya who have not been affected by the ongoing unrest and have kept working in their respective areas as usual.

According to the Thai labour minister, Thai workers in Libya has been categorized in three groups, including some 4,000-5,000 of them who do not want to return to work in Libya and his ministry's Department of Employment is finding jobs for them, those who do not want to go back to work in Libya but want to work in other foreign countries and his ministry is coordinating with the Taiwanese government to find some 3,000-4,000 jobs for them, and those who want to return to Libya and will be sent back when the situation there is normal without having to pay for any travel expense.
