Thai Commerce Ministry assures sufficient palm oil supply

BANGKOK, March 3 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce confirmed on Thursday (March 3) that there will be sufficient cooking palm oil supply to meet domestic demand.
Yanyong Puangraj, Permanent Secretary for Commerce, said that Thai public and private agencies concerned, including his ministry, are speeding up the distribution of cooking palm oil to all areas across the country to meet local consumers' demand.
Yanyong assured that the current 45,000-ton-cooking palm oil supply in Thailand from both local production and imports will be sufficient for domestic demand; so, local consumers should not be worried, saying that the National Oil Palm Board has not revoked its 120,000-ton ceiling for palm oil imports, the panel can, therefore, order additional imports of nearly 90,000 tons of semi-refined palm oil in its next meeting on March 8, if necessary.
Besides, Yanyong acknowledged, a new yield of local oil palm nuts will come out by the end of this month, and that his ministry has ordered the Department of Internal Trade to monitor the distribution of palm oil through all available channels, including local department and convenient stores and food houses, to ensure the sufficient supply.
As people are afraid of a palm oil shortage and they are buying excessive amounts to build up their own stocks. The senior Thai commerce ministry official asked the local consumers to stop the practice. (TNA)
