Authorities speed up to help Thai workers in Libya

BANGKOK, March 3 (TNA) - Thai authorities are speeding up assistance for Thai workers in riot-torn Libya, saying that the next group of Thai workers from the North African nation is expected to arrive home on March 5.

Chavanond Intarakomalsut, Secretary to Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, who has been in Tunis, Tunisia, to follow up the help for Thai workers evacuated from Libya, confirmed the accelerating efforts on Thursday (March 3), saying that his ministry has chartered two trips of a ship from Italy to evacuate some 4,000 Thai workers from Libya to Tunisia.

Chavanond revealed that each trip should take 20 hours and if there is not a problem, the first group of Thai workers evacuated by sea should arrive in Thailand on March 5, and that more Thai workers from Libya will also be evacuated.

According to the senior Thai foreign ministry official, evacuations are now focused on Thai workers from Tripoli, where the situation is more serious than other areas in violence-ripped Libya. (TNA)
