Thai workers evacuated from Libya total over 5,700

BANGKOK, March 3 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Labour has reported that some 5,742 Thai workers have been evacuated from Libya to safe places since political violence erupted in Libya last month, with 1,299 of them having arrived in Thailand.
Thai Labour Minister Chalermchai Sri-on said that a latest flight carrying 160 Thai workers arrived in Thailand at 8.45am Wednesday morning; while two more flights, EK384 and EK 412, carrying 26 and 22 additional Thai workers arrived in Thailand Wednesday afternoon, one at 0:05pm and the other at 4pm respectively.
Chalermchai revealed that another chartered flight was also set to fly some 200 Thai workers from Malta to Thailand after they have left Libya--although its schedule has not yet been confirmed, and that a chartered ship arranged by the Royal Thai Embassy arrived at a Tripoli port from Italy around Wednesday noon (Thailand's time) and to stop at the port for five hours to pick up 2,405 Thai nationals to Tunis, Tunisia, where they would get flights back to Thailand. The ship would then return to the Tripoli port to carry another 2,000 Thai nationals to Italy on March 4.
Meanwhile, the Thai Cabinet has approved in principle a 343-million-baht budget sought by the Thai Ministry of Labour to assist Thai workers who return from riot-torn Libya. But the Thai labour minister noted that Thailand's Bureau of the Budget will endorse only the exact amount of financial support handed out to the Thai returnees--which may be less than the Cabinet's approved fund, and that most Thai workers who are members of a fund set up by his ministry to assist Thai workers overseas are eligible for a 15,000-baht support each; while those who are not members will receive part of the official financial support.
According to the Thai labour minister, a PR budget of some five million baht is to be spent on keeping Thai nationals working in Libya and their relatives informed by media reports on the updated situation and welfare benefits they are entitled to receive and on providing additional channel for Thai workers in separate areas in Libya to communicate with the Thai Ministry of Labour through their relatives so that official support can reach them as soon as possible.
