European Union gives an ultimatum on Thai vegetables and fruits

BANGKOK, March 2 (TNA) - The European Union has given an ultimatum on Thai vegetables and fruits after finding pests from 16 kinds in five categories of Thai vegetables and fruits exported to the union. If there are more than five such findings a year, the union will immediately block their imports.
Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Supachai Phosu said that after finding pests from basil, sweet basil, hairy basil, fennel, chili, bitter gourd, balsam pear, small eggplant, long eggplant, purple eggplant, yellow-berried nightshade and parsley, the European Union issued a new regulation under which it would prohibit their imports immediately if it found pests from the products for over five times per year.
Mr Supachai also said that the European Union approved Thailand’s proposal for strict examination of Thai products before their export to the union. With the response from the union, Thailand will start strict examination from March 15 onwards.
Besides, the European Union includes vegetables, fruits, cut flower plants, ornamental plants for growing, and seeds to be exported from Thailand to the union into the list of plants under strict hygienic control in addition to 16 other categories of plants.
The Agriculture Department responds to the new measure. It selects 14 standard companies to supply such products for export. It also warns Thai operators to meet the standard of the European Union and not to smuggle goods because if wrongdoing continues, the European Union may prohibit its import of Thai vegetables and fruits.
In Si Sa Ket province, Somsak Suwannasujarit, the provincial governor, led academics from the Si Sa Ket Horticultural Research Center to the Agricultural Knowledge Center in Kantharalak district to teach the use of pesticides to growers of rambutan and durian which are suffering serious pest attacks.
Mr Somsak said he declared Kantharalak, Sri Ratana and Khun Harn districts areas of severe pest attacks. The three districts are Si Sa Ket’s important locations of orchards including rambutan and durian orchards. He is allocating a budget to urgently procure pesticides for affected rambutan and durian growers who have altogether about 1,000 rai (1.6 square kilometers) of orchards. (TNA)
