DNA samples of relatives of Thai quake victims to reach NZ March 4

BANGKOK, March 2 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Police Office confirmed Wednesday (March 2) DNA samples from the relatives of Thai earthquake victims in New Zealand will reach New Zealand on Friday. They will be examined and the Thai embassy in New Zealand will then arrange for the return of the bodies of the Thai victims to Thailand.

Mr Ruangyuth and Mrs Dokmai Intrangkoon, the parents of Miss Tha-nida Intrangkoon who is one of the six Thai nurses missing in the earthquake in New Zealand, were the last family that handed documents, photos and dental records of the nurse to the Scientific Crime Detection Division.

Their DNA samples were also collected for comparison with a DNA sample of the body believed to be their daughter.

Police Major General Prawut Thawornsiri, spokesman of the Royal Thai Police Office, said the DNA samples of the relatives of four Thai nurses would reach New Zealand on March 4.

The police spokesman quoted Police Lieutenant General Jaramporn Suramanee, head of a team of Thai officials handling searches for the missing Thai nurses, as reporting that they might recover the bodies of two Thai nurses. One is the body of Miss Harithaya Luangsurapeesakul and it was identified with her fingerprints Tuesday.

The other is believed to be Miss Wanpen Preeklang for a bracelet on the body. If DNA samples from the bodies match those of relatives, the finding will be proposed to a medical committee of New Zealand for confirmation and then the Thai embassy will arrange for the return of the bodies. (TNA)
