Attempts to rescue Thai workers from Libya continue

BANGKOK, March 2 (TNA) - Attempts to rescue Thai workers from Libya are continuing. Another group of 26 Thai workers will arrive in Thailand on Wednesday (March 2).
Regarding the progress of assistance for Thai workers in Libya, Labour Minister Chalermchai Sri-on said that 5,742 Thai workers were already evacuated to safe places. Of the people, 1,299 workers already returned to Thailand and 26 more Thai workers will arrive in the country this afternoon and evening.
The ship that will pick up Thai people in Libya reached the port of Tripoli at noon, Thailand local time. It will dock for five hours to wait for Thai people there and will then leave for Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.
Regarding a request for 343 million baht from the government to help Thai workers, the labour minister said that the amount would pay for the rescue of workers who were victims of disasters and it had nothing to do with the return trips of Thai workers. The people eligible for the financial aid are the members of the Labour Ministry’s fund to help Thai workers overseas. Each affected member will receive 15,000 baht and almost all the Thai workers in Libya are the members of the fund.
Regarding another request for 5 million baht for public relations, the labour minister said the sum would be spent on informing affected workers and their relatives of the welfare and privileges available for them. He said the Budget Bureau would decide if the budget requests should be met. (TNA)
