JAPAN TO BUY LNG FROM BONTANG AT HIGHER-THAN-AVERAGE PRICE
Jakarta, Aug 20 (ANTARA) - Japanese gas companies have agreed to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Indonesia's Bontang field in East Kalimantan at a higher-than-average price, an energy official said.
The Japanese side agreed to pay the higher price in negotiations on the extension of their Bontang LNG purchasing contracts with Indonesia, Djoko Harsono, deputy for financial, economic and marketing affairs to the head of the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BP Migas), said here Wednesday.
"The Japanese companies have agreed to buy the LNG at a price above the normal level. The talks with them now only concern technical transportation problems," he said.
Harsono said the LNG price in Japan now ranged between 13 and 18 US dollars per MBTU with the crude oil price recorded at 110 US dollars per barrel.
The price the Japanese were prepared to pay for LNG from Bontang was now among the highest in the world, he said, adding the Japanese were willing to do so because of their long-standing ties with Indonesia.
"Japan has been a buyer of LNG from Indonesia for decades. The cost of transporting LNG from Qatar is higher than from Indonesia to Japan. Now they have agreed to add the difference in these transporation costs t
