Russia-US media conference to open in Boston
BOSTON, Massachusetts, March 2 (Itar-Tass) - A discussion of
professional problems of the media communities of Russia and the United States must become a permanent component of the dialogue within the framework of the Presidential commission for cooperation between the two countries. This is the premise proceeding from which are the organizers and participants in a session of the Commission's working group on information exchanges.
The session opens here on Wednesday under the direction of Mikhail
Shvydkoi, special representative of the RF President for international
cultural cooperation, and Judith McHale, US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy.
The Russian delegation includes the chiefs of leading media ranging from Rossiiskaya Gazeta to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, from Kommersant to Moskovsky Komsomolets, from the GO Magazine to theTV-Center network.
Network media are represented as well: the Gazeta. RU electronic
edition, the Live Journal Company, and the Internet site of the Echo of Moscow radio station.
Invited to the session on the US side are key players of the local
media market, among them the leaders of sectoral subdivisions of the Time and Yahoo Companies, the Gannett publishing firm, leading specialists in modern information technologies, and representatives of the Knight Foundation and other organizations and programs promoting the development of journalism.
The main subjects for discussion fitting to the participants in the session have been selected: the state of and prospects for media business; journalism as a changing profession; and new media technologies.
Apart from speeches and general discussion, the conference program
also provides for a visit to the Media Laboratory of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology -- one of the best-known and authoritative
sectoral innovation centers in the US.
By mutual agreement between the sides, those present at the session are to endorse a decision to set up a new subgroup on the media within the framework of the Commission. The work of the subgroup is to be coordinated by Itar-Tass and the Bureau of International Information Programs of the US Department of State.
