Two remaining Thai detainees in Cambodia to seek royal pardon

BANGKOK, March 2 (TNA) - Two remaining Thai detainees in Cambodia, Veera Somkwamkid and Ratree Pipattanapaiboon, who were charged with illegal entry and espionage by Cambodian authorities, will seek a royal pardon by the Cambodian King and a release on bail.

Panich Vikitsreth, a Bangkok MP of Thailand's ruling Democrat Party who was also charged with illegal entry into the Cambodian territory but was earlier released on bail, told journalists in the Thai capital on Wednesday (March 2) that he had talked with Veera and Ratree's families who said they now want to seek the royal pardon from the Cambodian monarch and the release on bail pending the completion of judicial processes in the neighbouring country for the two Thai nationals, who have remained in a Cambodian jail.

Panich revealed that Veera, a leader of the Thai Patriots Network, is now seriously sick due to his deteriorating physical and mental health with allergic spots in several parts of his body and bruises at his head, and that members of his family is coordinating with authorities concerned to visit him at the Cambodian prison on March 4.

The Democrat MP said that Thai parties concerned are trying their best to assist the remaining two Thai detainees in Cambodia.

Regarding a move by the Thai Patriots Network to file Veera and Ratree's case with the Cambodian Appeal Court after they were earlier sentenced to an eight-year and a six-year in jail by the Lower Court for the charges respectively, Panich acknowledged that a 30-day period provided by the Cambodian law to lodge the case with the Appeal Court has already passed, warning that the two Thai detainees will bear the brunt of any action deemed violating the Cambodian law.
