Thai Cabinet gives green light for G-to-G cassava exports to China

BANGKOK, March 2 (TNA) - The Cabinet has given the green light for Thailand's exports of some 400,000 tonnes of cassavas to China under a government-to-government (G-to-G) agreement--in order to relieve official stocks of the produce.

Deputy Government Spokesman Watchara Kanika said that the Thai Cabinet has approved the cassava exports to China's two state enterprises for their production of ethanol for domestic use with a low price of 6,010 baht per tonne on average due to some 70 per cent deteriorating cassava supply in the Thai government's stocks.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, therefore, acknowledged that a price guarantee scheme for local farmers appears to be more practical than a loan programme for major Thai farm produce, like cassava, to address the problem of excess supply with low prices of any Thai farm product. (TNA)
