Ferry with Russian evacuees heading for Malta
MOSCOW, March 1 (Itar-Tass) -- The sea ferry Sveti Stefan carrying
Russian evacuees has left riot-swept Libya and is heading for Malta, a
spokesman for the Russian Emergencies Ministry told Itar-Tass early on
Tuesday.
According to the spokesman, the ferry is carrying 397 people,
including 126 Russians.
"The ferry is heading for Malta's port of Valletta, from where two
Emergencies Ministry planes will bring Russian citizens to Moscow," the spokesman said.
The ferry left Montenegro's port of Bar on February 23 and reached the Italian Bari on the following day, making a stopover for refuelling. The storm delayed its arrival in Ra's al-Unuf till February 27. Bad weather then kept it from leaving the port.
The evacuees were staying in a camp four kilometres from the port,
being provided with water, meals and medicines. The ferry is also carrying Turkish citizens who were working in Libya under contracts with Russian Railways Company.
Clashes between the opposition and government troops have been
sweeping through Libya since February 15. According to some reports, some 2,000 people have been killed in the riots.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry has been evacuating Russian citizens from Libya since February 22. It has made seven flights - three to Tripoli and two to Surt, evacuating 510 people, including 341 Russians.
