THAI insists on necessity to control flight attendants' weights

BANGKOK, Feb 28 - The management of Thai Airways International (THAI), the national flag carrier, insisted Monday (Feb 28) on the necessity to control flight attendants weights to improve their personalities.
THAI vice president for products and services development Teerapol Chotechanapibal and director for flight attendant management Chatchawal Senawong elaborated on the necessity after their flight attendants have lodged a complaint with the Thai Labour Ministry that the national airline's management has violated their rights for recently issuing a personality improvement regulation, including the imposition of a body mass index (BMI) control.
Under the new regulation, stewardesses must cap their BMI at 25 and their waistline at 32 inches; while stewards must limit their BMI at 27.5 and their waistline at 35 inches.
The airline management said that the new regulation was announced on May 11, 2010, giving the THAI flight attendants six months to comply with it but later finding that among 6,000 flight attendants, less than one percent or 60 people were unable to comply.
Teerapol insisted that the new regulation is necessary because THAI is one of world-class airlines and plans to be the third best airline of Asia and be among the top five airlines of the world in the foreseeable future. Therefore, THAI flight attendants are to have nice personalities and can perform their duties up to a competitive standard. The THAI management said it has already sent its explanation to the director-general of the Labour Protection and Welfare Department in the wake of the flight attendants’ complaint. (TNA)
