Thai PM orders DSI to find vested interests in palm oil shortage
BANGKOK, Feb27 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday he wanted the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to look into the vested interests that take advantage of palm oil shortage in the country although its initial investigation found no irregularities.
Speaking to reporters about solutions to palm oil shortage, Abhisit said actions by the National Oil Palm Board were increasing supplies to markets and their prices started to decline. Concerned authorities will meet and review situations on March 8 and now the government is pushing for sufficient production to meet the needs of local consumers.
In response to the fact that the DSI found no irregularities relating to palm oil shortage but there are quick supplies of palm oil just after the government launched solutions, the premier said that as far as economics is concerned, the production costs that were higher than retail prices discouraged producers from rolling out their merchandise.
Regarding possible hoards, the prime minister said his government was trying to restore the balance of palm oil supplies and the DSI would have to further investigate if there were any vested interests in the palm oil shortage. He assured that legal actions would be taken against wrongdoers even if they were key figures of coalition parties.
The Thai Commerce Ministry has ordered ten palm oil factories to supply 1 million bottles of palm oil with pink caps to shops and food markets per day so that the one-liter palm oil bottles will be available at 47 baht apiece from February 28, 2011, onwards. The availability is expected nationwide from March 7.
At present, palm oil shortage remains at food markets in general. Each stall has only a few palm oil bottles with blue caps for sale and most stalls are selling corn oil and other kinds of oil pending the supplies of bottled palm oil with pink caps.
Thai Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai said that operators would speed up supplying the products to retail shops and tomorrow bottled palm oil with pink caps would be available at retail shops at 47 baht per bottle.
Purchase would not be limited Monday, she added. (TNA)
