Thailand providing rehabilitation to Vietnamese surrogate mothers
BANGKOK, Feb 27 (TNA)- Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security is providing rehabilitation to Vietnamese women hired as surrogate mothers for Taiwanese clients.
Thai police and authorities cracked down a surrogate baby breeding ring and rescued 14 Vietnamese women on February 23.
The Vietnamese surrogate mothers are now under care of the Kredtrakarn Protection and Occupational Development Center in Bangkok. Two of them have delivered babies and seven others are pregnant.
All of the Vietnamese women said they wanted to return to Vietnam and deliver babies there. Eight of them had families and five of them have their own children.
All of the Vietnamese women said they were hired for surrogate services for the first time and they had been deceived that the services were legal.
Thailand’s Social Development and Human Security Minister Issara Somchai visited the Vietnamese surrogate mothers at the centre on Sunday.
He said the coordination of their repatriation with the Vietnamese embassy is now the responsibility of the Immigration Bureau that takes charge of their case although the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security enforces the human-trafficking law and is empowered to repatriate victims under government-to-government agreements.
The minister noted that prosecution under the human-trafficking law would normally take about a year and victims and suspects would otherwise have to stay in the country until their cases are finalised. (TNA)
