Situation along Thai-Cambodian border improves but concerns remain
SI SA KET, Feb 27 (TNA)- The situation along the Thai – Cambodian border in Si Sa Ket province in northeastern Thailand is improving but concerns remain.
Thai soldiers have allowed local villagers to attend their farmland in the Khao Phra Wihan National Park, bordering Cambodia. The villagers can now take care of their cassava plantations in the compound of the park near the Thai-Cambodian border in Kantharalak district. However, the villagers must leave their ID cards with soldiers at a checkpoint before reaching their plantations.
Soldiers from the Suranaree Task Force also set up another checkpoint at the Huay Dan bridge which is about one kilometer from the gate of the Khao Phra Wihan National Park to strictly block outsiders.
In Phum Srol village which was the hardest hit by border clashes early this month, paramilitary rangers from the 23rd regiment and local people are building in-ground shelters at a day care center that takes care of 40 children.
In the meantime, vocational school students and staffs are building seven houses for clash victims there. They work seven days a week to complete the houses by March 25 as scheduled.
Also in Si Sa Ket, Thai and Cambodian traders restore their confidence and return to do business at the market near the Chong Sa-ngam border pass which is an important border trade location of the province. However, the number of the traders who return to the market is still small.
Traders from both countries are still afraid of more clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers pending demarcation and negotiation. (TNA)
