Second group of 449 Thai workers arrive from Libya
BANGKOK, Feb 27 (TNA) - The second group of over 400 Thai workers arrived from Libya on a chartered flight Sunday morning and over 4,000 more Thai workers will be evacuated Monday.
A total of 449 Thai workers employed by Odebrecht which is a construction company contracted to build an airport in Tripoli, Libya, arrived in Thailand at 5.45am Sunday.
The Thai workers who arrived from Libya were happy to return to their homeland safely. The company had them board a plane from Libya to Malta where they took the chartered flight back to Thailand. Their company will bring them to the Mor Chit bus terminal so that they can take passenger buses to their home provinces.
Each worker received 1,000 baht from their job placement company to pay for their bus trip home and 500 baht from their Libyan employer. Labour authorities will compile their names and offer each of them 15,000 baht from the government’s fund for Thai workers overseas next week.
Sumet Mahosot, deputy director-general of the Employment Department who welcomed the Thai workers at Bangkok airport, said nearly 20,000 Thai workers were left stranded in Tripoli. The Labour Ministry and the Foreign Ministry will send a cruise liner to pick up Thai workers from Libya to Malta and Italy on Monday. The trip should carry 4,000 Thai workers. The problem is that the nearly 20,000 Thai workers left in Libya cannot seek an exit visa to leave that country and this obstructs their evacuation.
The deputy director-general said that when situations in Libya returned to normal, he would contact companies in Libya to arrange for the Thai workers’ trip to resume their work without facing any surcharge.
Most Thai workers who arrived home Sunday said they wanted to return to Libya when peace was restored there because their incomes in Thailand could not support their families.
Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has pledged immediate assistance for Thai workers in Libya. He said the Foreign Ministry and the Labour Ministry were contacting concerned employers and companies to ensure Thai workers stayed in safe places in Libya pending their evacuation and that the cabinet would pay for the evacuation.
