UNESCO backs UN resolution on settling Thai-Cambodian border rows through bilateral mechanisms

BANGKOK, Feb 26 (TNA) - A visiting special envoy of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)--who met Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya in Bangkok on Friday--has shown UNESCO's support on a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution issued earlier this week, recommending settling Thai-Cambodian border rows through bilateral mechanisms.
Abhisit said after the 30-minute talks with the UNESCO special envoy, Koichiro Matsuura, that UNESCO supported the UNSC resolution. Besides, UNESCO has acknowledged Thailand's perspectives on the border problems with neighbouring Cambodia, saying that both sides share the same views on many issues.
The Thai premier noted that any management of the Preah Vihear Temple without an agreement on border re-demarcation could lead to disagreement. Therefore, Thailand wants the issue to be relieved before the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee considers the Preah Vihear management plan proposed by Phnom Penh.
Abhisit said he has also informed UNESCO that Thailand has invited Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An to visit Thailand and Sok An has already accepted the invitation, but the schedule has not yet been finalized.
After visiting Thailand, Matsuura will visit Phnom Penh to receive information on issues concerning the Preah Vihear World Heritage site. But he has not plan to inspect a border area. (TNA)
