Qatar Calls on Libyan Government to Protect Civilians
Geneva, February 25 (QNA) - The State of Qatar stressed that it was following with deep concern the tragic events taking place in Libya since Feb. 17, especially in light of the reported news about the Libyan authorities use of aircraft and live weapons and mercenaries in face of the civilian population, which has led to big losses in lives.
The State of Qatar has called on the Libyan government to shoulder the responsibilities to protect civilians, allow them to demonstrate peacefully and express their views freely as guaranteed by heavenly laws and international conventions.
This came in a statement delivered by Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations (UNOG) Ambassador Abdullah Falah Al Dossari before the special session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva today on the human rights situation in Libya, at the initiative of Hungary on behalf of the EU and the support of 20 Council members, including the State of Qatar.
The statement urged the international community to work to help the Libyan people to achieve their legitimate aspirations for freedom and dignity.
In this context, the statement called on the Libyan authorities to maintain security and stability of the country, the need to provide legal protection to civilians and to refrain from all efforts aimed at inciting sectarian strife between the people of one homeland.
The statement also stressed the need to allow access of humanitarian organizations and workers in the field of humanitarian relief in order to provide humanitarian assistance to the Libyan people, the need to respect peaceful assembly, expression and freedom of the press demanding the lift of restrictions on all forms of media and communication organs. It also stressed the need for the enforcement of legal accountability.
Concluding, the statement called for the dispatch of an independent and fair international fact-finding committee to probe into what could amount to crimes against humanity. It expressed the State of Qatar's strong with the Libyan people in their struggle for freedom, dignity and human rights hoping that they would surpass this ordeal as quickly as possible and with the least damage.
