Thai private sector urged to be prepared for AEC

BANGKOK, Feb 25 (TNA) - Thai business operators have been urged to be prepared for trade liberalization in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which is scheduled to be established by 2015.

Veerasak Khowsurat, Director of Thailand's International Institute for Trade and Development, made the call, saying that Thai business operators are to proactively change their strategies by, for example, sourcing raw materials from other Southeast Asian nations to cut their production costs and studying consumers' tastes in regional markets to meet their demand.

Besides, Veerasak suggested that Thai business operators look for opportunities to relocate their production bases to other Southeast Asian nations where laws facilitate their businesses, and that they use neighbouring Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam as their bases in which they export their products to other markets outside the AEC. Veerasak pointed out that the AEC would enable Thai business operators to access regional land links and networks centred in Thailand, which would cut their costs and facilitate their management.

According to the director, the existing ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) has raised the proportion of Thai exports to other Southeast Asian countries to 21 per cent, from 12 per cent, so far. (TNA)
