Fortescue in billion-tonne iron discovery
Fortescue Metals Group Ltd says it has made a new discovery of more than one billion tonnes of iron ore in Western Australia's Pilbara region.
The 1.03 billion tonnes of high-grade Brockman ore is in the inferred category of Australia's mineral reporting code, which is the least proved-up category.
The project has been name Minding and is 35km south of the miner's first mine, Cloudbreak.
"The proximity of Minding to Fortescue's existing Chichester Hub mining operations and unique high performance modern infrastructure boosts their collective value significantly," Fortescue said in a statement late on Friday.
Fortescue said the high-phosphorus discovery could significantly increase the miner's total production and be used to mix with lower phosphorus ore.
"The new Minding discovery will create a new high-value blend and thus extend the life of these mines," it said.
