First group of Thai workers from Libya likely to arrive home on Feb 26

BANGKOK, Feb 25 (TNA) - A senior Thai Labour Ministry official confirmed on Friday (Feb 25) that the first group of some 400 Thai workers in violence-plagued Libya had been evacuated by sea to Turkey and should be boarding planes and arrive in Bangkok by February 26.

Prawit Kiangpol, Deputy Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Labour's Department of Employment, said that another passenger ship from Italy should reach Tripoli, Libya's capital, Friday evening to bring 2,000 more Thai workers to first shelter in Tunisia and to then pick up additional 2,000 Thai workers to Italy, and that about 8,000 out of some 23,000 Thai workers need immediate evacuation from riot-ripped Libya for their safety.

Prawit revealed that a delegation of the Thai Labour Ministry left Thailand's Suvarnabhumi International Airport for Tunisia Thursday night and they will travel to the Libyan border to bring the 4,000 Thai workers back to Thailand, saying that evacuations by sea are expected to begin this evening.

Regarding Thai workers’ calls for help through the media, the senior Thai Labour Ministry official insisted that his ministry is trying to help them as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the Thai Ministry of Labour’s help center for Thai workers overseas--which has been operating for three days, has so far received over 1,000 phone calls from relatives of Thai workers in riot-torn Libya and the center's staff members are gathering their demands and arranging for help accordingly.
