Quake in Laos felt in several areas in Thailand (UPDATED)
BANGKOK, Feb 24 (TNA) - Several provinces in Thailand were affected by a moderate earthquake measuring at least 4.7 on the Richter scale which hit neighbouring Laos late Wednesday night, but there were no reports on any casualty in the affected areas.
Local authorities reported on Thursday (Feb 24) that the quake, with its epicenter located in Laos' Saiyaburi Province, 20 kilometers underground, was felt in Thailand's Nan, Phrae, Loei, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Nong Buo Lamphu and Khon Kaen Provinces, particularly in the northern Nan Province, where fractures were found at a main hall of a local ancient temple aged more than 500 years.
The tremor, which took place minutes before midnight, also rocked a local hospital in the northeastern Loei Province for some five seconds, prompting a group of patients and officials to rush out of the hospital's buildings. The quake, about 140 kilometers from Loei, also frightened other local villagers who were sleeping, especially those living near the Huai Nam Man Reservoir who rushed out of their houses.
Teachers and students of Princess Chulabhorn’s College in Loei, which is a boarding school, had to leave their buildings for safety as well. The Nam Man Tambon administrative organization in Loei's Muang District also evacuated their people. (TNA)
