Authorities seeking ways to assist Thai people stranded in Libya

BANGKOK, Feb 24 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Labour is seeking ways to assist Thai nationals, mostly workers, who have been stranded in violence-plagued Libya.

Thai Labour Ministry Spokesman Sutham Natheethong said on Thursday (Feb 24) that his ministry has been trying to provide assistance and to ensure safety of all the Thai nationals stranded in the North African nation, where deadly popular uprising against the Libyan top leader Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year-regime has continued over the past week and has appeared to be even escalating.

Sutham acknowledged that the worsening situation in Libya, including the closure of its air space, has made it difficult for his ministry to make arrangements to evacuate the Thai citizens from the riot-ridden Arab country.

Sutham said, however, that a team of Thai Labour Ministry spokespersons will fly to Malta bordering Libya on Thursday to find a practical way to assist the Thai nationals in the North African nation, namely a planned arrangement of chartered flights to first deliver food and other necessary supplies to the stranded Thai people.
