Yemen spends over $ 10 million on manufactured baby milk, study

annually on manufactured baby milk, a study suggests.

The UN Children's Fund UNICEF said that Yemeni people pay about $ 5.3 million on nursing bottles and $ 5.6 million on the industrialmilk powder.

The UNICEF official in charge of food programs Thikra al-Nuzaili said millions are spent on breast-milk substitutes every yearwhich in turn affects on the health of newborns in the country.

Al-Nuzaili said the rate of natural suckling has decreased to 12%, adding this increases the rates of malnutrition andmortality of under five children.

She stressed the necessity of conducting campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of natural suckling and its benefitsfor either child and mother.

Yemen is one of the countries where many children suffering fromdiseases caused by breast-feeding substitutes.
