Thai Foreign Minister: All parties satisfied with the meeting to solve Thai-Cambodian conflict
BANGKOK, Feb 23 (TNA) - Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya insists all parties are satisfied with the outcome of a meeting to solve the Thai-Cambodian conflict. He will discuss with the defence minister, the scope of inspection for observers from Indonesia in the next few days, and confirmed the observers’ role was not an intervention.
After returning from the ASEAN foreign ministers’ informal meeting in Indonesia, Kasit said all parties were satisfied. The meeting resolved to send observers to both countries, and called for bilateral negotiation through their existing mechanisms.
Asked if Cambodia still intends to ask the International Court of Justice, to interpret its previous verdict on the Preah Vihear temple, the Thai foreign minister said he had no idea but he expected Cambodia to respect the statement of the ASEAN chair.
In response to the report local residents of Phum Srol village in Si Sa Ket province, will ask international organizations to demand Cambodia compensate them for damages caused by Cambodian artillery, Kasit said the people might not be able to file their complaint directly, and the government promised full compensation for their damages.
Meanwhile, the House Committee On Foreign Affairs, has called on the government to express clear stances on ASEAN’s participation in bilateral negotiation between Thailand and Cambodia, and on its opposition to Cambodia’s attempt to push for its Preah Vihear management plan. The committee commented the government was unclear and slow in its expression on the issues.
In Si Sa Ket province, provincial authorities organised a ceremony to boost morale for people in Phum Srol village who have been affected by border clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers in Phu Ma Khua area since February 4. The villagers had to flee to temporary shelters. They still live in fear and are afraid that border clashes will recur. (TNA)
