Thai Labour Ministry ready to evacuate Thai workers from Libya

BANGKOK, Feb 23 (TNA) - Labour Minister Chalermchai Sri-on has confirmed his ministry was ready to evacuate Thai workers from Libya.
He said Labour Ministry officials are monitoring the situation closely together with staff of the Consular Affairs Department, and they can arrange for the immediate evacuation of workers if needed.
The Employment Department of the Labour Ministry has also opened a help center for affected Thai workers overseas. The center informs relatives of the conditions of workers in countries at unrest. It has been opened unofficially for two days and about 1,000 relatives of Thai workers have phoned in to make enquiries. The center will add more phone numbers Wednesday afternoon.
In Buri Ram, relatives of Thai workers in Libya sought help from the provincial employment office, as they cannot contact their relatives.
In another development, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva chaired a seminar on social security for informal workers this morning. He promised his government would implement Section 40 of the 1990 Social Security Act, that allows workers in the informal economy to subscribe to the Social Security Fund. The subscription will start on May Day this year. He expects 2.4 million subscribers in the first year. (TNA)
