Thai Deputy PM views ASEAN foreign ministers’ resolution positively

BANGKOK, Feb 23 (TNA) - Responding to the resolution of the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting, to send observers from Indonesia to inspect a truce in Thailand and Cambodia, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said it was a good development, and supported the Thai government’s intention to solve problems with Cambodia through bilateral negotiation.

He said he agreed the United Nations would not intervene in the problems, and let ASEAN supervise the solution following a call for its mediation.

Suthep said he believed the problems will not escalate.

Regarding a report local residents in Phum Srol village in Si Sa Ket province, want the Thai government to ask the International Court of Justice to prosecute Cambodia for firing at and damaging the houses of Thai people there, Suthep said he had not been informed of the movement and he wondered if the issue could be filed with the Court. He said relevant authorities should make a decision on the matter.

Thai Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said he would like the government to use its mechanisms, to solve the problems with Cambodia, and concerned parties should wait and see if this was successful.

In response to a proposal for Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw their soldiers from their 4.6-square-kilometer disputed area, General Prayuth said unless Cambodia withdrew its soldiers, the Thai army could not do so because it had to protect national sovereignty, its people and its officers. (TNA)
