MALAYSIA CONDEMNS ANTI-ISLAMISATION CONGRESS

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia strongly condemns the proposed Anti-Islamisation Congress by the Pro Koln Group to be held in Cologne, Germany next month.

Foreign Minister Dr Rais Yatim said the Sept 19-20 congress would be an actof provocation to Islam and the Muslim world.

"Malaysia strongly condemns the holding of the congress as it blatantly depicts insensitivities and sheer act of provocation to Islam and the Muslimworld," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

Rais said Malaysia demanded that the organisers, in particular the Pro Koln Group, reconsider their intention and weigh the consequences of theiraction.

"Nothing positive can be achieved through this event but will only inciteviolence and hatred, resulting in adverse consequences," he said.

Rais said Malaysia recently sent a protest letter to the German governmentthrough its embassy here.

"Malaysia and the international community, especially Muslim nations, areagainst this congress as it will not benefit anyone but arouse religious hatred.

"Whether it likes it or not, the German government should be fully responsible if the congress goes on although it is organised by anon-governmental organisation in Germany.

"Malaysia wishes to emphasise the importance of efforts be taken by governments and responsible organisations to build and promote interfaith relations, and dialogue and understanding between different religions andcultures," he said.

Raid said these efforts stood to be compromised if certain parties such as the organisers of the Anti-Islamisation Congress chose to resort to spreading lies and insults in the name of freedom of speech, which would indeed reflecttheir sheer ignorance.
