Thai court grants bail to 7 leaders and 1 supporter of the red shirt movement

BANGKOK, Feb 22 (TNA) - Thailand's Criminal Court on Tuesday (Feb 22) granted bail to 7 co-leaders and a supporter of the red shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on the condition that they must not leave the country without its approval.
After hearing witnesses who are outsiders and members of the UDD testifying in favour of the temporary release of the UDD leaders and a supporter on Monday, the Criminal Court resolved to grant bail to UDD co-leaders Natthawut Saikua, Dr Weng Tojirakan, Korkaew Pikulthong, Kwanchai Praipana, Wiphuthalaeng Patanaphumthai, Nisit Sinthuprai and Yoswaris Chuklom as well as UDD supporter Phumkitti Sukjindathong who placed 600,000 baht bail each.
Their temporary release was granted on the condition that they must not leave the country without the court’s consent and must not instigate unrest or disobedience among people. The court had its staff bring its temporary release order to the Bangkok Remand Prison on Tuesday.
The order delighted relatives of the detainees and caused some supporters to burst into tears of joy.
Narinpong Jinapakdee, a lawyer of the UDD co-leaders, placed additional 200,000 baht each to back another bail request for Mr Natthawut, Dr Weng and Mr Wiphuthalaeng who have been prosecuted for previously leading protesters to the residence of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda.
The lawyer also placed 1 million baht as bail to seek the temporary release of Mr Yoswaris who has been charged with lese majeste and arms robbery.
Red shirt protest leaders have been detained since last May after a crackdown on their protests which led to the deaths of 91 people, mostly civilians, and a number of the injured. The crackdown took place after red shirt protesters had occupied parts of Bangkok for about three months. (TNA)
