Thailand mulls over management of water basins

BANGKOK, Feb 22 (TNA) - Thailand's Department of Water Resources has called on the country’s 25 water basin committees for a joint discussion on a viable water management strategy to permanently ease out water shortages nationwide.
Pimuk Simaroj, Thai Vice Minister for Natural Resources and Environment, said when officiating a seminar on the management of water basin resources in Bangkok on Tuesday (Feb 22) that devising the Thai water management master plan has become a critical agenda for concerned agencies, as the country has been repeatedly hit by both water shortages in the dry season and inundations in the annual monsoonal period.
Pimuk noted that proposed ideas and opinions raised at Tuesday’s seminar by the 25 water basin committees and other Thai agencies concerned will be later submitted to Thai Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti for further consideration.
The vice minister said that his ministry has also conducted a field survey in Thailand's 10 northeastern provinces under a project funded by an over 800-million-baht state budget--aimed to provide sufficient water supply, sustainably, to local farmlands and villages, and that the project will be later expanded to other areas across the country.
