Checa leads Superbikes at Phillip Island

Feb 22 . (A.A) - Spain's Carlos Checa heads into this weekend's opening round of the 2011 Superbike World Championship as the man to beat after posting the fastest time from a two-day test session at Phillip Island.
Checa clocked a one minute, 30.578 second best lap in the session to top the timesheets but it was a different story for Australian Troy Corser.
The seven-time Phillip Island race winner could only finish 16th in the test session on his factory BMW, four spots behind Mildura-based wildcard Josh Waters.
Checa finished ahead of fellow Ducati rider Sylvain Guintoli, Honda's Jonathan Rea, Ducati's Jakub Smrz and Kawasaki's Joan Lascorz.
The day ended badly however for Rea, who crashed out and suffered injuries to his left hand as his bike caught on fire following the incident at the fast turn three.
The season opening round of the 2011 championship will be held at the Victorian motorsport venue from Friday when practice and qualifying get underway.
A pair of 22-lap races will be run on Sunday.
