Thai protest leader arrested on lese majeste charge

BANGKOK, Feb 22 (TNA) - Thai police arrested a core leader of the "red siam" group, a splinter of Thailand's anti-government red-clad National United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), Surachai Sae Dan (Danwattananusorn), at his house in Bangkok's suburban Nonthaburi Province late Monday night (Feb 21)--after his arrest warrant on lese majeste charge was recently approved by the Thai Criminal Court.
Surachai was taken to Chokchai Police Station in the capital's Lat Phrao area, where he was questioned by police investigators and detained, as his supporters were gathering there to boost his morale.
The "red-siam" core leader refused to give his statement and did not seek bail. The police officially denied his bail later, reasoning that the lese majeste charge against him for his remarks at a rally in Bangkok in December last year was deemed offensive and detrimental to the security of the revered Thai monarchy.
Meanwhile, core leaders of the yellow-clad People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), including Sondhi Limthongkul, a Thai media mogul, and Major General Chamlong Srimuang, a former Bangkok governor, have reported to police on charge of violating Thailand's Internal Security Act (ISA). Their lawyer said that the PAD core leaders have all denied the charge and will later provide their written testimonies before the court. (TNA)
