Thai economy forecasted to expand by 3.5-4.5% this year

BANGKOK, Feb 21 (TNA) - Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) expects the Thai economy to grow by 3.5-4.5 percent this year with exports and tourism being the main drives of the expansion.
NESDB Secretary-General Arkhom Termpitayapaisit predicts the Thai economy will grow by 3.5-4.5 percent in 2011 due to tourism and the recovering world economy that will benefit Thai exports.
He said this year the number of tourist arrivals in Thailand is estimated at 16.8-17 million, going up from 15.8 million last year. Inflation should rise by 2.8-3.8 percent instead of 2.5-3.5 percent as earlier anticipated because of the increasing prices of many products. This year will be a very good year for the agricultural sector, especially rice, cassava, corn and rubber.
Arkhom said the gross domestic product of Thailand expanded by 7.8 percent last year as investments in the private sector grew by 13.8 percent, household spending increased by 4.8 percent, the export of products and services rose by 14.7 percent and industries mounted by as much as 13.9 percent.
Thai Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai reported that Thai exports in January amounted to 16 billion US dollars, rising by 22.25 percent. The increase happened to all categories of products. The value of exported agricultural and agro-industrial products rose by 28.5 percent and that of exported key industrial products increased by 19.6 percent. Exports to main markets increased by 23.4 percent and those to emerging markets went up by 15.9 percent. (TNA)
