ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting expected to help resolve Thai-Cambodian border rows

BANGKOK, Feb 21 (TNA) - Ongoing Thai-Cambodian border problems are expected to be concretely resolved after an ASEAN foreign ministers meeting--scheduled to be held in Indonesia on February 22.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban expressed the optimism on Monday (Feb 21), saying that he hopes for a satisfactory result from the upcoming ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting to pave the way for a concrete settlement of the pending Thai-Cambodian border issues.
Regarding recent talks between the Thai and Cambodian militaries resulting in an informal agreement on no reinforcements and no movements of forces of both sides along the border, Suthep revealed that the talks were at the officials-level, not the government-level, aimed to avoid any renewed clash between Thai and Cambodian border troops--following a spate of crossfire which erupted on February 4.
The Thai deputy premier, who oversees national security, insisted that both Thai and Cambodian military officers in border areas have held regular talks to build up mutual trust with maximum restraint to avoid fighting along the border, so have authorities of the Thai and Cambodian Foreign and Defence Ministries.
