Thai PM announces policy to solve unwanted pregnancy among youth

BANGKOK, Feb 21 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday announced to implement a policy to solve the problem of unwanted pregnancy among Thai youth. He said eight main agencies would teach children and teenagers and promote joint efforts to solve the problem.

Abhisit laid down the policy to representatives of provincial child protection committees and concerned agencies in the government and the private sectors. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security organized the meeting at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) in Bang Na area.

The prime minister ordered eight main agencies namely the Interior Ministry, the Education Ministry, the Public Health Ministry, the Labour Ministry, the Culture Ministry, the Information and Communication Technology Ministry, the Royal Thai Police Office and the Social Development and Human Security Ministry to work out solutions to the root causes of the problem in individual areas.

The agencies will involve concerned parties at the provincial level to campaign against and solve unwanted pregnancy. They will implement action plans to achieve short-term goals in three months and the implementation will start this April. The rate of pregnancy and birth delivery among teenage girls aged 15-19 in Thailand is higher than that of Asia. The rate in Thailand is 75 per 1,000 pregnant women while that in Asia is 65 per 1,000 pregnant women.

Isara Somchai, the Minister of Social Development and Human Security, said that his ministry was trying to solve the problem of unwanted pregnancy. It has organised the meetings of provincial child protection committees to update them on the problem and possible solutions. Kamphaengphet in northern Thailand will be the first province to try the solutions as there are a number of pregnant teenage girls.

The minister said that unwanted pregnancy caused health problems and poor quality of life to both mothers and children. The rate of disabilities is unusually high among children of teenage mothers because their mothers are under stress. (TNA)
