Thailand insists on solving border conflicts through bilateral negotiation

BANGKOK, Feb 20 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva convened concerned ministers and heads of government agencies on Sunday afternoon (Feb 20) in the lead-up to the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Jakarta that will discuss mainly Thai-Cambodian conflicts on Tuesday (Feb 22). The Thai authorities stand firm on conflict resolution through bilateral negotiation.
Abhisit met Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon and Army commander-in-chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha. They agreed that in the unofficial meeting in Indonesia this Tuesday Thailand would insist on solving border conflicts with Cambodia through bilateral negotiation as the United Nations Security Council has called for.
In response to a recent truce negotiation between Thai Army chief-of-staff General Daopong Ratanasuwan and Cambodian deputy Army chief Lieutenant General Hun Manet, the prime minister said that was the matter of military authorities and it was not considered as any agreement with Cambodia.
Suriyasai Katasila, secretary-general of the New Politics Party, said that the eight-point truce agreement between Thai and Cambodian armies put Thailand at a disadvantage, made it inferior to Cambodia and caused the country to lose its territory permanently. The party suggested the government expel Cambodian soldiers and people out of the 4.6-square-kilometer disputed area before sealing any agreement.
Meanwhile, businesses are very active at markets near the Ban Klong Luek permanent border pass in Aranyaprathet district and at the Rong Klua market in Sa Kaeo province during the three-day holiday from February 18-20.
Days of silence become the past at the border trade venues. Thai tourists are crossing the border in Aranyaprathet district to visit Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom in Siem Reap province of Cambodia.
Border situations are calm in general. Relations between people of both countries remain good and Thai products are exported to Cambodia as usual. Authorities expect tourism through this section of the border will return to normal this week unless another tense situation erupts. (TNA)
