Authorities taking care of locals after series of bombings in Thailand’s deep South

NARATHIWAT, Feb 20 (TNA) - Senior local officials in Thailand’s southern border province of Narathiwat province visited local people injured in ambushes and recent bombings while the chief of Sungai Kolok district urged security agencies to better protect business and entertainment venues.
About 20 people were wounded by a shooting and car bomb by presumed insurgents Saturday night (Feb 19) in the violence-plagued province.
Narathiwat governor Thanon Wechakornkanont and local rehabilitation officials went to Naradhiwasrajanagarindra Hospital on Sunday (Feb 20) to visit and give moral support to the 13 people who were injured in ambushes and car bomb explosion. They also gave financial aid to the injured.
Surachai Chawalarat, chief of Muang Narathiwat district, inspected the site of the car bombing and boosted the morale of local people. He promised to offer compensation for damaged shops and motorcycles and have relevant workers repair the local community and clean the road that was widely stained with blood and shattered glass in order to reopen it to traffic.
After the car bomb explosion in front of a karaoke shop that injured a lot of people in Muang Narathiwat district, Somkiat Suwannimit, chief of Sungai Kolok district, urged local security agencies to intensify security measures for business and entertainment venues in Sungai Kolok.
He also ordered officials to check the surveillance cameras that the Provincial Administration Department and the private sector had installed on 66 locations. They were ordered to maintain any broken cameras immediately.
Karaoke operators in Sungai Kolok district fear that violent incidents will affect local tourism, so they have urged the government to arrest those behind the car bomb explosion in Muang Narathiwat district and deploy security authorities in entertainment venues to restore confidence among Thai and Malaysian tourists. However, Malaysian tourists still arrive and check in at hotels in Sungai Kolok as usual. (TNA)
