Qatar Ladies Open: Omani Wild Card Nabhani Plays Jankovic in First Round
Doha, February 20 (QNA) - Omani Wild Card entrant Fatma Al Nabhani will challenge former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the first round of the main draw the US $ 721,000 prize money WTA Qatar Ladies Open tennis tournament starting at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex here Monday.
Another notable Wild Card Sania Mirza of India will also have her cut out against seasoned Russian opponent Maria Kirilenko. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will play Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.
Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who has received a 'bye' in the first round, will take on the winner of the match between Russian Nadia Petrova and Italian Roberta Vinci.
Besides Wozniacki the other three top seeds given byes are Russian Vera Zvonareva, Italian Francesca Schiavone and Chinese Na Li. The trio gets into action on Wednesday in the pre-quarter-finals stage.
The President of the Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) Nasser bin Ghanim Al Khelaifi, QTF Board members and the Tournament Director, Karim Alami were all present at the main draw ceremony held here Saturday evening.
Marion Bartoli (France), Nadia Petrova (Russia), Sania Mirza (India) and Fatma Al Nabhani (Oman) represented the participating players at the event.
Fabrice Chouquet is the supervisor from the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) of the tournament where the winner receives prize money of US$ 111,000 besides 470 points.
The runner-up will bag US$ 60,700 and 320 points. The semi-finalists will win US $ 32,000 and 200 points. The quarter-finalists will win US$ 17,300 and 120 points.
Those progressing up to the second round will win US$ 9,525 and 60 points while first round finishers will win US$ 5,200 and get one point.
The qualifying rounds are already underway. Poland's Urszula Radwanska today plays Serbian Bojana Jovanovski on court one followed by a clash between two Australians Jelena Dokic and Jarmila Groth.
