Thai PM: ASEAN will facilitate Cambodian-Thai talks, but won’t intervene in details

BANGKOK, 20 Feb (TNA) - As Thailand and Cambodia have not resolved their border conflicts, there have been calls for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to mediate. However, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva reiterated that ASEAN would only coordinate negotiation between Thailand and Cambodia and would not intervene in the details of the negotiation.
In his weekly talk programme on Sunday morning (Feb 20), Abhisit referred to the resolution of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for ASEAN to coordinate bilateral negotiation between Thailand and Cambodia. He said Thai-Cambodian border conflicts would be tabled at the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Jakarta on February 22 and Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya would attend the session.
According to the Thai prime minister, Thailand is happy for ASEAN to coordinate bilateral negotiation between Thailand and Cambodia and this is according to the intention of ASEAN that it will limit its roles at witnessing and facilitating the negotiation. ASEAN will not intervene in the details of the negotiation.
In the meantime, the prime minister said, he and concerned ministers who were the ministers of foreign affairs, defence and natural resources and environment would explain what really happened along the Thai-Cambodia border to the world community.
Abhisit said he already phoned the director-general of the UNESCO and the latter understood situations between Thailand and Cambodia. He has asked the UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee to suspend its consideration on any plan to manage the vicinity of the Preah Vihear temple and wait for Thailand and Cambodia to negotiate under their demarcation framework. Pending the negotiation, both sides must refrain from worsening tension in the disputed area. (TNA)
