STATE HEAD IN OVORKHANGAI AIMAG

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The President Ts.Elbegdorj started Thursday his trip in Ovorkhangai aimag.
Firstly, the President has visited family of Ts.Dondovkhuu, a herdsman of Olziit soum's 1st baga (the smallest administrative unit in localities), and got acquainted with spring works. This family owns over 800 heads of livestock.
“This winter it snowed all throughout the land. Even though, we had three consecutive snowfalls, and snowfall level is reaching man's knee, we have learned much from the last winter's experience, and currently have suffered no serious animal losses" herder Ts. Dondovkhuu said. "It is all result of our good preparation heeding for such risks. Now herders have come to realize that the quality, not the number, of the herd is most important" he added.
Olziit soum is yet to suffer any livestock loss, informs Yo. Rentsendorj, governor of the soum. "During last winter's zud, over 160 thousand livestock was reduced to 90 thousand. This year, however, due to the preparations and hard work of the herders, animal loss is close to non-existent. In addition, 53 families who were impacted most by last year's zud received MNT one million worth of livestock, and 25 families received MNT 300 thousand worth of livestock through a UN project" he said.
With a population over 2700, there is a risk of increased unemployment rate as the number of herders loosing livestock, source of their livelihood increases. However, with the help of programs targeting small and medium enterprises development, more new jobs have been created lately. Six new small enterprises were created, such as bakery and sewing shop. “Depending on the size of the population, soum Development Fund averages about MNT 35-50 million per soum. Our policy is support residents teaming up, and creating cooperatives. We believe that participants in such cooperatives are more responsible and principled in spending allocated funds" said D.Togtokhsuren, governor of Ovorkhangai aimag.
A Deputy Speaker G.Batkhuu has stressed that the state has already started to provide assistance for residents of Ovorkhangai province, in creating jointly owned technical workshops, which can help herders to have their own small agricultural farming.
President Ts. Elbegdorj has said that he applaud the herders for learning from their past experience, and preparing for the risk that might come. The government has taken numerous measures in supporting herders, small and medium enterprises, and soum development. “These projects and programs must be responsible and accountable," he has stressed.
The President and the accompanying party arrived at the Arvaikheer city of Ovorkhangai afternoon of 17 February. Honorary guards of the Unit number 256 of the Armed Forces have welcomed the President upon his arrival.
