Thailand aims to become world’s tenth largest vehicle manufacturer by 2015

BANGKOK, Feb 18 (TNA) - Thailand is aiming to become a base for vehicle production in Southeast Asia, and to become the world’s tenth largest vehicle manufacturer by 2015.

2010 was a record-breaking year for the Thai automotive industry. With a new high for auto-production at nearly 1.7 million vehicles, the value of the industry rose to as high as 1 trillion baht or 30 billion US dollars. 900 thousand vehicles were exported, worth 400 billion baht, or 13 billion dollars.

Wanlop Tiasiri, President of the Thailand Automotive Institute, said Thailand would produce over 2 million vehicles in 2011, over half for export. By 2015, Thailand would produce over 2.5 million vehicles, and would become a base for vehicle production in Southeast Asia.

Wanlop added the ideal situation is for multinational companies to invest in Thailand, as a base for vehicle exports to the world market.

Thailand should focus on producing vehicles with high potential for international success, namely the one-ton pick-up truck and small eco car.

Last year, Thailand produced over half of all one-ton pick-up trucks sold worldwide, and it is expected to continue dominating the market in the coming years.

Last year, Thailand began producing the energy efficient Nissan March, and plans to expand production of this type of vehicle in the coming years. (TNA)
