Pedestrians targeted in traffic crackdown
(AAP) A one-day traffic operation has netted 830 jaywalkers and drivers committing minor offences across Sydney.
Operation Obedience kicked off on Thursday in the city's northern and southern suburbs.
Failure to obey red and orange traffic lights, stop and give-way signs and other intersection signs resulted in fines to motorists.
Pedestrians who took their lives into their own hands got more than a slap on the wrist.
South West Metro Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli, said the operation was aimed at reducing the high number of pedestrian deaths and injuries that occur at or near intersections.
"We have far too many people killed at or very close to intersections, Asst Comm Mennilli said in a statement on Friday.
"Whilst the community might think crossing against the lights is a minor offence, pedestrians put themselves and others in grave danger when they do so."
