AUSSIE SHOPPERS TO PAY 10-CENT LEVY FOR PLASTIC BAGS

MELBOURNE, Aug 18 (Bernama) - The four-week trial of a 10-cent levy on plastic bags was launched this morning in the Australian state of Victoria.

The trial aims to cut plastic bag usage and will be launched at a supermarketbin Narre Warren, on Melbourne's south-eastern outskirts, byVictorian State Environment Minister Gavin Jennings.

Coles, Safeway and IGA retailers in the provincial cities of Narre Warren, Wangaratta, in the state's north-east, and Warnambool, in the south-west, aretaking part in the trial to run until Sept 14.

The competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has also authorised supermarkets to publicly release datashowing how customers respond to the charge.

The data it gathers will help the retail industry and Victorian StateGovernment devise a strategy on reducing plastic bag use.

Profits made during the trial will go towards environmental projects.
