Thailand, Laos to discuss joint co-op against drugs

BANGKOK, Feb 18 (TNA) - Thailand and Laos will hold a ministerial meeting in Vientiane, Laos' capital, on Friday (Feb 18) to discuss joint efforts against drugs, mainly covering drug trafficking across their border.
Thailand's Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga and representatives of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board will hold the discussion with Soubanh Srithirath, Lao Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office and Chairman of the Lao National Commission for Drug Control and Supervision (LCDC).
The Thai Justice Ministry said on Thursday (Feb 17) although narcotic problems are subsiding in Thailand, illicit drugs, namely methamphetamine and marijuana, have been smuggled from neighboring countries into the Thai side, especially into the Thai northeastern provinces of Nong Khai, Loei, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Ubon Ratchathani and Amnat Charoen.
Pirapan revealed that the Thai and Lao governments have resolved to have the bilateral meeting on joint cooperation against narcotics--at which results from a previous senior officials’ meeting on anti-drug cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, held in Vientiane on April 8 last year, will also be raised.
