Concerns remain along Thai-Cambodian border

SI SA KET, Feb 17 (TNA) - The situation along the Thai-Cambodian border in Thailand's northeastern Si Sa Ket province has remained unstable--although local villagers said on Thursday (Feb 17) that they did not hear any clash between Thai and Cambodian soldiers last night, the first peaceful night after their return home from temporary shelters provided by local authorities five days ago.

A community leader who is "kam-nan" or the head of Rung Sub-District, the closest locality to the clash-plagued Phu Ma Khua area along the common border in Si Sa Ket's Kantaralak District, acknowledged although the authorities have allowed local people to return home since last Saturday, some 10 per cent of them have not yet returned for fears of renewed clashes; while those who have returned have not yet resumed their work as they are apparently uncertain about the border situation and local rubber farmers have changed the time of their latex tapping.

However, Thai and Cambodian border traders do their businesses as usual at the Aranyaprathet checkpoint and the Rong Klua border market in Thailand's eastern Sa Kaeo Province despite limited number of cross-border travellers. In Soi Dao District of the nearby Chantaburi Province, fruit trade is particularly active near the border, with purchase orders for Thai fruits having been growing when compared with those in the same period of last year.

Meanwhile, Thai Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan visited the Burapha Task Force along the Thai-Cambodian border in Sa Kaeo and told Thai soldiers to strictly perform their duties and exercise restraint. The Thai defence minister also insisted that the Thai military would do its best to protect national sovereignty. (TNA)
