Cambodia promises to hold bilateral talks with Thailand with the presence of ASEAN

PHNOM PENH, Feb 17 - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwannakhiri said on Thursday (Feb 17) that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has acknowledged Phnom Penh intends to resolve border rows with Thailand and is ready to enter into bilateral negotiations with the presence of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)--in which both Thailand and Cambodia are members.
Trairong, who is paying an official visit to Cambodia together with Thai Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot, revealed that Hun Sen sent the message when meeting him and Alongkorn at the Cambodian Government House in Phnom Penh this morning, and that the meeting was friendly.
Trairong said, however, that the meeting focused on bilateral trade talks, representing the first meeting between Thai and Cambodian leaders after a spate of border clashes between the two neighbouring countries, which erupted early this month and were then raised at a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting in New York on February 14.
Apart from bilateral trade, Trairong noted, Hun Sen also raised border issues with the promise, insisting that Cambodia wants to resolve the pending border rows with Thailand through a permanent ceasefire, as recommended by the UNSC in its Feb 14 resolution, and through border re-demarcation and bilateral negotiations--with ASEAN witnessing the talks. According to the Thai deputy premier, Hun Sen also said that Phnom Penh does not want a war of words between the two sides and urged for a compromise.
